Heraldic colour is medium blue, with red and purple accents.
New Sephos is famed for its musical college, which has produced many of the greatest bards of the last century. The city stands near the original site of (and is named after) Old Sephos, which a legend seems to suggest was the first town to fall to the wizards’ spirit-ending spell. It is a very cosmopolitan city, with varied architectural styles and decorations from all the corners of the world.
The townspeople are an odd mixture. Rather than the overall similarity of other towns, the only thing that residents of New Sephos seem to have in common with each other is that they live in the same place. This is because of the large numbers of artists, musicians, and other performers, who are generally very emotional people – their moods change at the drop of a hat. They are also quite noisy.
The spirit is rather scattered as a result of so many people coming and going, but there are parts of his personality that stay the same no matter what. He is not very soft-spoken, and can be a little overbearing at times. As flighty as his irregular inhabitants, he nonetheless is quite solid and dependable when the need arises. He likes good music, and can be quick to anger if it is played inadequately. In fact, due to his mercurial nature, he can be quick to anger about a lot of things.
Due to its constantly-changing populace, the amount of magic in New Sephos varies over time. There is always some arcane magic present, as the teachers at the college have a smattering of ability between them, and the clerics provide divine magic to those in need.
Again a fairly standard system, but a little more forgiving than most others. For particularly serious crimes, the spirit consults the most creative minds in the city to devise a fitting punishment. The guards dress as commoners, and they blend in with the general populace until needed. If extra support is needed, up to seven heavily-armoured knights can be dispatched within a couple of minutes. The regulars are relatively easy-going, but the armoured knights are quite heavy-handed (probably because the armour is similarly heavy).
The prosperity of the surrounding lands means that New Sephos never wants for food. This is its main form of income, although some additional revenue comes from the products of the various artisans that live there. Musical instruments are fairly cheap – some of the scholars from the musical college design new ones, so there are often a couple of unusual instruments to be found as well as the traditional ones. Depending on where you source them from, goods can be bought and sold at anything from half price to double the usual, due to the rather random nature of the spirit’s influence.
From Mt Reynard and the surrounding highlands, the Ezra river flows northwest – and the floodplain where it meets the sea is the most fertile land on the continent. New Sephos lies near the middle of this basin, and is the main gathering point for all of its bounty – from there it is transported to Redking for trade. Trees are fairly sparse on the plain, but grow in greater numbers near the river. Building materials are mostly imported, so the structures in Sephos are all different types of stone and wood from their neighbours.
Because of the abundance of water near Sephos, the city enjoys a temperate climate the whole year round, with mild summers and warm winters. It rains most in spring and summer, but still a respectable amount in the cooler months. A weak south wind blows from the sea all day every day, and in the rainy season some sea-squalls reach far enough inland to ruffle a few feathers in the city.
