Heraldic colours are pale red and bright green, with purple accents.
In contrast to Redking City, Agium is a lot less wealthy and a lot more “common” (also not quite big enough to be called a city yet). A large number of breweries dot the town, churning out huge amounts of alcohol. Support industries for the brewers are also widely represented, with a large number of bars, inns, and taverns in town. More travellers pass through Agium than any other town because of its central location – many other places are less than a fortnight’s walk away – so the numerous taprooms and alehouses enjoy almost continuous patronage.
Agium’s spirit is quite self-absorbed, although not quite to the same extent as Redking. He has an equally high opinion of himself, but does not (often) make fun of those he considers beneath him. While he is nowhere near to being the smartest spirit around, he does know the most about alcohol.
While not falling-down drunk all the time, many of the residents of Agium are at least partially inebriated at all hours of the day. They are quite friendly, but seem to be constitutionally unable to take a joke at their expense. Good-natured banter often ends with the Agian walking away in a huff, and ignoring the other person for half an hour or so. They enjoy dancing, but their music is almost unknown outside the town walls.
Many of the inhabitants are too sodden with drink to be able to cast any spells at all, and because of this Agium is rather lacking in magical ability. There are only a very few clerics in town, and most of those are almost permanently drunk – but still functioning. Arcane casters tend to avoid Agium, as alcohol makes spells significantly more likely to misfire.
For petty crimes the populace is often left to fend for itself, but murder, rape, and other heinous crimes are usually punished in the time-worn tradition of a lynch mob. The soldiers are often unable to do anything about this, other than make sure it’s the right person being hung. Wrongfully accused persons are placed in protective custody until the mob has dispersed and forgotten.
Agium is an agricultural town, with farmlands surrounding the town in every direction. While not as bountiful as that of the Floodplain, the food produced is more than enough to supply the needs of the town, and then some. A neat profit is made by merchants buying wholesale from the farmers and exporting the food to towns which need it. The farms are the town’s main source of both food and income, although the shore of the nearby lake sports a few fishing hamlets. Apart from the food and the alcohol, items in Agium tend to be slightly more expensive than usual. Various sources offer numerous explanations for this, but they are equally disregarded.
Agium lies just north of Short Lake, which fills mainly from the water abandoned by clouds that try to climb up the steep side of the Hermit Plateau. The farmland surrounding the town is used for food and alcohol grain, and vineyards line the lower slopes of the Plateau.
About half of the annual rainfall occurs in late spring, tapering off towards summer. Rather than brief, heavy showers, the rain falls for two hours or so at medium intensity. The weather in Agium is a little warmer than in Caitan and Ravenwatch, because it is down at sea level. Mild winters and warm summers are the usual pattern, and all but the strongest of ocean breezes dissipate by the time they get as far as Agium – and having spent all of their energy getting there they are felt as an occasional light breeze.
