SPIRIT

Vostromiras (Strom)

Yarad’s spirit can be rather overbearing to new visitors. His sense of camaraderie extends to almost everyone, and he quite enjoys walking the streets in a specially crafted metal golem, talking to people and sharing their work. Occasionally he forgets the strength of his iron frame, and the marks of his friendship can take some time to heal. As a particularly hard worker, he expects the same from others, and has little patience for ignorance or willful stupidity.

PEOPLE

As a frontier town, Yarad Crossing has more than the usual number of assorted daredevils, treasure-seekers and adventurers. They are a rough and ready folk, and share their spirit’s dislike for stupidity – on the frontier, ignorance can get people killed. Dulled reflexes are another hazard, and all forms of alcohol are banned outright. The majority of the populace is solidly built, and they are stronger than people from other places. The people have a strong sense of right and wrong, and it is especially hard to bribe or otherwise subvert the guards.

TOWN

Yarad Crossing spans the river Yarad (oddly enough), which marks the western border of what is generally considered to be the civilized world. The town is well fortified, with a goodly number of guards posted at regular intervals along the top of the walls. The buildings are mainly wooden, as are the palisades, and are very solidly constructed.

MAGIC

The people of Yarad Crossing prefer muscle to magic, and have little use for flashy, show-off wizards and sorcerers. Many clerics are noticeably martial in character – a lot more so than in other towns – and quite a number of them are indistinguishable from the frequent targets of their healing powers.

CRIME

There is little tolerance for crime in Yarad Crossing, and the usual response is the forcible ejection of the criminal from the town’s boundaries – unless the victim finds them first. Like the people, the justice of Yarad Crossing is often do-it-yourself style. For this reason, few guards are needed inside the palisades, and most of them are posted along the walls of the town. They do have crossbows, though, and are quite good at hitting targets on both sides of the wall.

ECONOMY

The nearby Lake Essam provides good irrigation for the farms north of the western stretch of Vidar Road, and these provide some of Yarad Crossing’s food – the rest is imported. The lake is also a good source of fish, and a number of small fishing boats make a decent living from what they catch and sell. There are a few logging operations on the edge of Vidar Forest, and the quality hardwood they produce is the town’s livelihood. Adventuring-type goods are more expensive in Yarad Crossing than in other towns, to take advantage of the many would-be pioneers who want to try their luck outside the wooden palisades. Everything else is average price, and buyback is also default.

LOCATION

Far to the west of any other settlement of significant size, Yarad Crossing is a frontier town in all senses of the word. The river Yarad flows north from the Dragon’s Spine to the sea, and the town spans it with a number of wooden bridges. To the northeast is Sylas Wood, and much of the town has been built from its timbers.

WEATHER

The summers are warm in Yarad Crossing, as are the winters. In the autumn, the sea breeze gets stronger and blows in rainclouds and the occasional storm. Rain falls in respectable amounts in the summer and autumn, and the drier half of the year is interrupted by the occasional brief shower.
