CITY

Redking City is the place where everything is for sale. Nobody’s quite sure who was originally pretentious – the merchants, or the spirit – but now they are equally full of themselves. The city proper is spectacular to behold, with fastidiously clean streets, polished stone facades, and wrought-iron detailing. The buildings outside the inner wall are rather less attractive, and primarily wooden, but still quite clean and organized.

PEOPLE

The whores of Redking City are known far and wide, to the point where just about any unaccompanied woman (and even sometimes an accompanied one) walking through town is likely to be “propositioned”. Women are thought of as little more than property in Redking, and are expected to do little other than service their husbands, cook, and clean. The merchants have absolute control over the inner city, and the thieves’ cartel reigns supreme outside the massive stone walls – though there is really little difference between the two. New folk are tolerated, so long as they bring sufficient money.

SPIRIT

Drai’rodenon (Roden)

Redking’s spirit is rather pretentious, and likes to make fun of other towns. No other spirits really like him, but they put up with his ego because anything else would mean that the entire region would lose a lot of wealth. He is vain, and decades of labour have been spent making the inner city look increasingly imposing and important.

MAGIC

Because of its status as the central trading hub of the explored world, Redking City boasts the largest trade in magical items and ingredients. Every commodity that can be sold is sold in Redking, if you know where to look and are prepared to pay for it. This includes powerful clerics that can cast almost every spell, and a few hard-to-find wizards who are horrendously expensive. Magic-binding shackles are often used on spellcasting prisoners in chain gangs. There are a number of clerics in the city watch, but they rarely patrol the streets with the common guards.

CRIME

Crime is punished harshly, and the usual treatment of prisoners convicted of minor crimes is to make chain gangs of them. They are put to work cleaning the streets or some such, and the cruelest guards are often chosen to watch the gangs – usually with whips. The guards are largely ineffectual at preventing crime, but every so often they will make a big show of clearing out the criminals from the inner city – usually the ones who aren’t part of the guild or haven’t paid their dues in a while. The thieves guild keeps (unauthorized) crime to a minimum, usually in quite a brutal fashion.

ECONOMY

As stated numerous times before, Redking is a trading city. The flow of goods and services in and out of the city walls provides the main source of wealth to many who reside therein. Anything is for sale in Redking, so long as one can meet the (often exorbitant) price. Adventurers who come across curiosities in their travels often bring them to Redking, as they are almost guaranteed to catch the eye of some wealthy merchant with a penchant for oddities. Selling regular items is not really a good idea in Redking, as there is always someone selling them cheaper – expect only about 50% of the price for any common item. For rare items, it is just the opposite – up to 300% will be offered by greedy merchants with delusions of grandeur. Buying items is a bit of a let-down, as goods range from cheap, poor-quality junk to overpriced items of average workmanship. The thieves’ guild can often get better deals for its members. Much of Redking’s food is imported from New Sephos, but some is grown locally – the valley’s occasional floods make for rich soils, but can wash away careless farms.

LOCATION

Redking City is situated at the intersection of the continent’s main trade routes, a natural hub for trade across the civilized world. Forests once lined the slopes to the northwest and southeast of the city, but they have been logged extensively to provide the raw materials for the houses of the outer city. The Red River runs northeast past the city, and is its main (semi-clean) source of water.

WEATHER

Because of its location in the middle of a steep valley, Redking is often subject to strong winds. Summers are mild, and winters are cold. It rains more in the summer, and because the valley funnels clouds and rain, flash floods are sometimes a problem.
