CITY

Aside from being fairly wealthy, Port Deas is really rather an average harbour city. Harbourside is made from tarred wood reinforced with iron, so the sailors who come ashore to spend their leisure time feel at home, and the rest of the city is a mix of stone and wood. The waterfront houses taverns, inns, assorted curio shops, and other sorts of establishments that usually appeal to seamen, while the upper city is basically the same as a large town, except with more stores selling exotic goods and a larger flow of merchants.

SPIRIT

Rothfarrelon (Farrel)

The spirit of Port Deas is rather nondescript, and most of his time is spent making sure that his city runs smoothly. He is ambitious, but can get carried away with ideas that may not be the best. His clerics act as tax-collectors, and can protect themselves quite handily.

PEOPLE

Fairly average, for the most part, except for the sailors – but then sea-faring folk have always been a little bit odd. They are discouraged from passing up into the city proper by the (sometimes heavy-handed) watchmen, but many of them see no reason to leave the waterfront anyway.

MAGIC

Because of the sailors, who have since the beginning of time been superstitious creatures, a number of shops along the waterfront sell assorted totems and “magical” protection. Many of these are simply ways to separate gullible sailors from their money, but nestled among them are a couple of real magic shops. The tax-collecting clerics often have a few enchantment and movement-restricting spells ready, and others patrol with the guards. A few are left over for tending to the spiritual and health-related issues of their flock.

CRIME

Standard punishments apply for all crimes. See Sparks Hill. Sailors are usually given slightly harsher penalties than landsmen. There are always guards posted at the gates to the city proper, and regular patrols are made through the waterfront after dark, to discourage the more boisterous sailors from getting into too much trouble.

ECONOMY

A large number of fishing vessels provide for the city, and the nearby Goran Rivers make for good farmland. The excess is preserved and sent to various other places, especially inland towns that aren’t near rivers. Regular food is still needed, and although some is provided from nearby farms, most of it is imported from Agium. Items are usually at standard prices, and the waterfront sometimes has real magical items for cheaper than anywhere else. In the city proper, buyback is default; on the waterfront, it is a bit lower, to put a bit more squeeze on the sailors.

LOCATION

Located on the south coast of the continent, Port Deas sits at one of the mouths of the Goran River. The Bay of Lament provides anchorage for the deep drafts of the trading ships that come from far-off lands, and the riches they bring make Deas an economic power greater than Chakor, but lesser than Redking City. There are no farms close to the city, as the salt spray does more harm to crops than good.

WEATHER

Because of its proximity to the bay, Port Deas is subject to frequent rainstorms the whole year round. The wind blows from the sea for most of the day, but not generally enough to cause major disturbances to the fishing fleet or merchant ships. Summers are mild, and as well as the winters being rather cool in temperature, thunderstorms become common – averaging at least one per week.
