Chakor’s spirit delights in owning things. She has been filled with greed and avarice ever since the first person offered her gifts in exchange for protection, and it has only gotten stronger with time. Now material possessions no longer hold her interest, and she desires to own intelligent beings. The entire town now exists to continue the slave trade that has grown around it in the last hundred years.

TOWN

Over the last century, with the appearance of slave labour, the town has grown a lot more imposing in appearance. The stone walls surrounding the town are now the highest around any in the land, and many slaves have fallen to their deaths while working on them. Inside the walls the view remains bleak – the stone buildings, while straight and square, have little or no exterior decoration to break the monotony. The exception to this is the temple, which is supremely extravagant. Massive golden doors bar entry to all but the priests, and the only others who are taken through the temple are the slaves destined for the mines.

PEOPLE

The type of person that lives in Chakor is unlikely to be found anywhere else. They love contracts and red tape, and have a cruel streak a mile wide. They tend to do as little work as possible, instead making others lower down in the pecking order do it for them. A number of them are slave traders, and travel the countryside offering to buy up the debts of others. With these in hand, they confront the debtor, and chain them and drag them back to the city. Occasionally they will allow the debtor a (ridiculously) small amount of time in which to gather the money, and if successful they are not enslaved.

MAGIC

Chakor will harbour no arcane magic whatsoever – the spirit is paranoid that what happened in the deep mists of time and more recently to Kwona will happen to her. Sorcerers and wizards are feared and reviled as demon-worshippers and other such horrible appellations, and so the quickest way to identify a resident of Chakor is to cast some small cantrip in their sight. Most of the clerics are experts at enchantments and dominating spells, and are often quite wealthy due to the number of slaves they are able to capture.

CRIME

As one would expect, any crimes committed by travellers are punished by enslavement, unless the travellers have enormous amounts of money or power (political, magical, or physical). Slave crimes are harshly punished, and not a few slaves have died from the beatings administered for small misdemeanours. The ruling class is largely exempt from punishment, no matter what they do. The guards are efficient and brutal, and almost everyone who lives in Chakor loves reporting everything to them in the hope that something might give them the upper hand in their hidden power struggle.

ECONOMY

Chakor’s wealth comes not from trade with other towns, but from the warren of mines that honeycomb the earth beneath and beyond the south wall. Rich veins of iron ore and other metals twist through the sediments below the town, and over hundreds of years thousands of slaves have been worked to death in order to extract this vast mineral wealth. Some food is grown on the farms in the valley north of the town, but nowhere near enough to supply the inhabitants and the slaves as well. Much of the balance is imported from Agium, and the rest from New Sephos. Prices are very unfair in Chakor, and woe to those who try to complain about it. The inhabitants can afford the ridiculously inflated prices, as they are all wealthy by the standards of other towns. Visitors, on the other hand, may end up with debts too large to pay – and in Chakor that means a one-way trip to the mines.

LOCATION

Chakor is located in the southeast corner of the known world, and further to the south lies The Great Forest. The only people who pass through the forest are the slavers, to take captives from the savage barbarian tribes of the frozen south. A series of hills run close to the south and east of the town, and the lack of flowing water near town is made up for by a number of wells inside the walls.

WEATHER

Chakor lies in the rain shadow of the hills to the east, but because of its proximity to Long Lake and the Sterling Sea this puts the rainfall back to about an average level for this particular latitude. It rains most in the cool winter, and every few years the weather is cold enough to turn the rain to snow just after the coldest part of the year. Summers are mild, and due to Chakor’s location behind hills on all sides the wind seldom blows more than a light breeze.

SLAVES

Most slaves are put to work in the iron mine beneath the south corner of the city. The attractive or skilled ones are kept by the slave traders, and sold around the city to each other or to outsiders. Thousands of slaves have mined iron ore for a hundred years, and it shows no signs of running out any time soon. The pens are not clean, but in spite of this many unfortunates are born into slavery, and usually stay in servitude until they die. The only way for slaves to become free is to be bought by a kind soul, because escape is almost completely impossible. The slave markets are small but full of unscrupulous types who come for the chance of obtaining workers that they don’t have to pay.
