Like their guardian, the residents of Caitan are good, hard-working people, and are generous and kind to a fault. They are a playful lot, however, and good-naturedly tease each other all the time. They try to be friendly to everyone, and even if someone manages to offend them, they are still treated with courtesy (though the townsfolk tend to not want to talk to you anymore). Caitan’s people are easily stressed, and when under pressure they tend to get flustered and irritable. However, they always rise to whatever challenge faces them.
Caitan’s spirit is very intelligent, as the timbers of her houses were once trees from the nearby Woods of Knowledge. She knows much, for the beams of the houses are as much a part of her as the people who live under them, and the Wood’s collective consciousness is the foremost intellect in the world. Quiet and unassuming, Caitan is genuinely loved by almost all who know her. Her clerics are the lore-keepers of the town, and combine kindness and intelligence with great beauty.
Not many people or spirits know of this town, which is rather a pity – it is one of the nicest-looking towns in the entire land. The timbers of the Wood will bear no overt decoration, instead relying on subtle, natural shapes brought out of the grain by skilled hands, and an entire town constructed of this wood is quite beautiful. There is only a single taproom, attached to the only inn in Caitan, which barely makes enough money to keep itself going.
The Woods contain numerous sites of ancient sorcery – some standing whole and unsullied, others broken by the passing of countless years. Musty scrolls of forgotten magics lie strewn through towers of ages past, and stones of power lie undisturbed in the dappled light of the deep forest. Caitan is a naturally magical place, and not a few inhabitants have some talent in the spellcasting arts. Simple spells are commonly used, and a goodly number of magic items can be found in use around the town. Arcane casters are tolerated, but displays of power are regarded as being in poor taste.
Punishment for petty crimes is light, but the miscreant is prominently displayed to the rest of the townsfolk. The shame of having the entire town know of one’s misdemeanours is enough to keep most would-be troublemakers in line. More serious crimes are usually punished by permanent, magically enforced banishment. There are only a handful of permanent guards in Caitan, but the townsfolk know that the full might of their spirit is behind them. After their first run-in with the guards, many would-be criminals know it, too.
Caitan and its surrounds are largely a self-contained micro-economy, with only a slow trickle of money in or out. Strange items found in the forest are rather sought-after in Redking City, so a couple of merchants make the long trek up the Orange Way to be able to have exclusive access to these lucrative treasures. A couple of well-known artisans make their home in Caitan, and their masterpieces are also much coveted. All items are bought and sold at listed prices, but the townsfolk sometimes let friends have things on credit. Food is all locally grown, as the soil is rich and bountiful.
To the north and west of Caitan are the Woods of Knowledge, a dense forest that has stood for all of recorded history. The town proper stands in the middle of a plain, surrounded by small farms. The rich soil mean that the town and its farms are quite self-sufficient, which is fortunate since mountain ridges surround the plain on all sides but south. Water is drawn from artesian wells, as the streams in the region are not large enough to support a town.
Sheltered as it is behind the Wood and surrounding mountains, Caitan suffers little in the way of unfortunate weather. Neither summer nor winter bites deep (though the average temperature is a bit lower than in other towns), and the spring showers are heavy but brief. For most of the year the prevailing wind comes from the south, but in the winter the winds are less.
